Delta AY.4.2 variant less likely to show symptoms, finds study

A mutation of the Delta variant of coronavirus, categorized as a Variant Under Investigation (VUI) in the UK, appears to be less likely to show any symptoms, according to a new real-world study. 

The Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission [REACT-1] study revealed that the prevalence of Delta AY.4.2 variant has been increasing at a rate of 2.8% a day since the month of September. The findings are based on at-home swab tests taken by more than 100,000 people in England from October 19 through November 5. Those infected with the AY.4.2 variant had a lesser likelihood of having any classic symptoms, such as loss or change of sense of taste or smell, fever or new persistent cough, and were also less likely to have any other symptoms. Just 33% of the people with the mutation had any of the classic symptoms, compared to 46% of those having an infection with the Delta variant… (ET Healthworld – PTI, November 19, 2021)
